Don’t let the thought of eating healthy bore you. Get creative in the kitchen and add variety.
Eat Seasonally: shop your local farmers market or co op for whats in season. Try a new vegetable or fruit you’ve never even heard of. Last week I bought green garlic spears and roasted them, they were delicious! I will usually choose at least one new item every time we go to the grocery. To make my next meal creative I will look up a recipe including the new food and come up with an awesome dish.
Make a new sauce or marinade: sometimes chicken or any lean meat can get monotonous. Come up with a new dressing or marinade to switch it up a few nights a week. I like to make citrus based marinades with fresh herbs and spices.
Strive for 5: try to incorporate 5 different colors on your plate at each meal. Using this rule will make you think outside of the box and choose a variety of vegetables which will result in more vitamins and minerals in your diet.
Get creative with your recipes: A lot of the time we automatically assume if we are choosing a healthy lifestyle we have to give up everything we love like pizza, cookies, nachos, and so on. Don’t let that be you! Get creative! Choose better options of your favorite foods. One of my favorite go to’s is swapping a regular pizza crust for cauliflower crust which is packed with nutrients and fiber.
Convert your favorite sweet: Maybe you love sweets and just can’t stop thinking about them. Again make a healthier option of that sweet. I love dark chocolate and make my own now from coconut oil, cacao powder, stevia, and even adaptogens.
Find healthier versions of your favorite snacks: One of my go to clean cheats on the weekends are siete tortilla chips which are what is pictured. These chips are a couple of simple ingredients and taste delicious without all of the guilt!
Use a create your own food service: Make use of services like sunbasket and hello fresh. This will give you a chance to try new recipes and you can always recreate them later.
Use your produce as a container: make stuffed bell peppers or zucchini boats. Once again get creative with what type of produce you can use to stuff yummy ingredients in.
Use your peels: don’t throw away your peels in many instances they can actually give your food even more flavor and nutrients. An easy one is using not only the juice from your lemon but also using the zest to make a big citrus flavor in your next dish.
When you are thinking about cooking healthier meals just make it fun and use your creative brain you’ll never get bored!
Healthfully yours,
Krystal Goodman
